Drain Closure

Valves

Automatic closure valves are designed to prevent pollutants from escaping your site in emergency situations. They are installed into your drainage system to provide tertiary containment, ready for both proactive and reactive use.

What is a Flapstopper?

The Flapstopper is a pollution containment valve designed to prevent pollutants from escaping your site in emergency situations. It effectively converts your drainage system into tertiary containment, preventing contaminants polluting the drainage system during spills, fires, or high-risk activities like bulk fuel deliveries.

Typically installed at critical points, such as site boundaries or near containment lagoons, it can seal off drains to prevent environmental damage.

Environmental incidents, such as large-scale spills or firewater runoff, can lead to costly fines and clean-up expenses. Installing a Flapstopper is a cost-effective way to mitigate these risks. It is particularly beneficial for high-risk sites and COMAH upper-tier facilities, where tertiary containment is mandated under CIRIA C736 if secondary measures fail.

The Flapstopper is often referred to by other terms, including slam shut valve, shut-off valve, drain pipe seal, and tertiary containment valve. If you’re looking for a dependable alternative to penstocks, contact the team to discuss whether the Flapstopper is a suitable solution for your site.

There are multiple activation methods, usage applications, and benefits to these devices. All aim to reduce the impact of an environmental incident and prevent liquid pollution.

  •  Manual Activation: Activate by pressing a button on an above-ground control panel, hard-wired to the Flapstopper.
  •  Remote Activation: Close the valve by pressing a button on a site-wide control panel, which is connected via telemetry for remote activation.
  •  Automatic Activation: Install probes to detect specific parameters (e.g. pH, oils) and trigger closure when limits are exceeded. Alternatively, link it to existing systems, like fire or interceptor alarms, for automatic closure during incidents.

We recommend the Flapstopper for both reactive & proactive use.

  •  Reactive Usage: In emergencies like spills or fires, activate the Flapstopper to contain contaminants within your drainage system. Once the incident is controlled, you can arrange for the drains to be emptied and contaminants safely collected, reducing the environmental impact of an incident.
  •  Proactive Usage: Preventative closure before high-risk activities (e.g., fuel deliveries) ensures that any accidental spills are contained. If no incident occurs, the Flapstopper is reopened to allow normal water flow. Should there be a spill, the hazardous substance is contained safely and collection can be arranged.
  •  Durability: The Flapstopper is built to last, custom-made for nearly any drain size, and can withstand significant water pressure.
  •  Cost-effective: Unlike penstocks or bladder systems, the Flapstopper is more affordable and requires less site disruption during installation.
  •  Low Maintenance: Resistant to punctures, rodents, and harsh chemicals, ensuring long-term reliability and minimal maintenance.
