Bund Construction

COMAH reinforced concrete bund construction

We are experienced in designing and constructing a range of oil/chemical bunds to ensure they are legally compliant and offering sufficient environmental protection. Whether you have new oil or chemical storage or need to replace an existing bund we can offer design and construction services.

Benefits of our bund construction services include:

Concrete bund construction

We can conduct reinforced concrete pour bund constructions to meet the requirements of specific regulations e.g. CIRIA 736. Our concrete bund installations will be designed and constructed in line with BS EN 1992-3:2006. Bunds will be filleted and can have a specialist bund coating installed to prevent it from attack against the oil or chemical it holds. Where required we can install sumps and fit automatic bund dewatering devices.

Masonry bund construction

Masonry or reinforced masonry bunds can be constructed on many bunds however for a substantial amount of bunds this will not be an acceptable construction material and a concrete bund will be required. For any masonry bund constructions the design and build will be in accordance with BS EN 1996-1-1:2005+A1:2012.

Masonry bunds will be filleted to ensure a water tight seal and an appropriate sump can be installed. Where necessary the bunds will be lined with a chemical resistant two part epoxy resin to prevent the walls from being attacked by the oils or chemicals stored within the tank.

ReBund installation

ReBund is a modular system for quick and cost effective bund installs, it is manufactured from post-industrial plastic waste, with steel reinforcement for added strength. The modular system slots together and can be sealed to an existing base, or we can install a concrete slab if no base is in place. Rebund can be installed quickly and without the need for major plant equipment reducing disruptions to site.

Once the structure is in place it can be coated with specialist liners to protect it from attack by the chemicals or oils it is designed to capture.

ReBund is a flexible system so if the tank is decommissioned or you leave site it can be removed and reinstalled around another tank at a later date.

All bunds will be constructed following technical design by our environmental consultants and civil engineers to ensure they meet the necessary requirements laid out in legislation and guidance e.g. CIRIA 736 and The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations.

If you have a bund which needs repairing or bringing up to requisite standards e.g. non conformities identified by ISO 14001 auditors we offer comprehensive repair and upgrade services.

Extracts from Bund Construction Legislation and Guidance

“The quality of design and construction is fundamental to the integrity of the containment system. It is therefore imperative that any designer, contractor or maintenance works operative engaged to construct, extend or modify a containment system is experienced in designing and constructing to the relevant class of containment. As a minimum, the parties should have a proven history of carrying out the relevant type of work.

All works need to be properly designed, whether it is the construction of a new or replacement bund, the extension or modification of an existing bund, or repair and maintenance work as set out in current standards.”

Containment systems for the prevention of pollution (C736F)

"The container must be situated within a secondary containment system which satisfies the following requirements—

(a) subject to paragraph (5), it must have a capacity of not less than 110% of the container’s storage capacity or, if there is more than one container within the system, of not less than 110% of the largest container’s storage capacity or 25% of their aggregate storage capacity, whichever is the greater;

(b) it must be positioned, or other steps must be taken, so as to minimise any risk of damage by impact so far as is reasonably practicable;

(c) its base and walls must be impermeable to water and oil;

(d) its base and walls must not be penetrated by any valve, pipe or other opening which is used for draining the system"
